At what age can I start surfing?
There is no age to start surfing. At Authentique, we take the youngest as soon as they have the necessary maturity to join a course, around 7 years old!
At what age should I stop?
Never !
Should I know how to swim?
You don’t have to be an Olympic world champion in the 400m medley to get into surfing. Of course, being comfortable in the water is still a serious plus. Surfing can help cast out some demons. It should be noted, however, that all excellent surfers are excellent swimmers! In addition, the learning takes place on the green track of the ocean, in a completely secure area, where you can walk!
I skate, rollerblade, snowboard…, will this help me in my learning?
Of course, the practice of any sport whatsoever, in particular of another sliding sport is complementary, whether for motor coordination, or the use of its supports. You still have to know that surfing is a particular sport, where everyone’s sensitivity to the ocean and seamanship will be key elements in learning. Miss everyone, not sporty, but very receptive to the ocean, will be as successful as a snowboarding champion who has already acquired certain skills.
Is surfing dangerous?
All sports are dangerous if certain rules are not followed. There is still a very low number of accidents compared to most sports. Beginning supervised and guided by professionals allows you to optimize success and pleasure in complete safety.
Are there rules in surfing?
The growing popularity for several decades of surfing leads to an increase in the number of practitioners. Naturally a regulation appeared, which, if it is respected, allows everyone to have fun in the best conditions.
Can we surf all year round?
Yes, the isothermal equipment is currently of high quality, ensuring warmth and comfort. In France, and particularly in the south of the Landes and the Basque country, we are lucky to have waves all year round, and a wide choice of spots for all levels.
When is the best time to surf?
Summer is by far the best season to start: warm water, small waves, it’s great!
For experienced surfers, autumn is the “must”, the waves are starting to get bigger and the conditions are ideal. Be careful, there are people in the water! For the most “extreme”, lovers of thrills and intense sporting challenges, winter is the little European Hawaii.
How soon will I be able to surf?
Difficult to answer this question. It all depends on each person’s sensitivity to the ocean, and how to approach learning.
Where can I go surfing?
Wherever there is sea, there are, at one time or another, waves. In Europe, the south of the Landes, the Basque country and Portugal remain the most favorable places.
Can I buy a surfboard and start?
Of course, but you have to be careful to choose the right equipment for beginners, and above all not to buy the same board as Kelly, otherwise you will have a hard time. We still see too many people skip the steps, buy unsuitable equipment to stay “in”, and end up getting disgusted with surfing, it’s a shame! Getting advice in a store is a good option, but you have to be careful not to be fooled. Going through a school remains the surest way to learn to recognize good equipment.
Should I take surf lessons?
Freedom is the essence of surfing! Obviously, you can learn to surf on your own, but taking lessons saves so much time, and allows you to acquire the right skills. The sea is a unique, complicated, living, moving element! Being guided to approach it is a comfort and a huge time saver that all initiates will confirm to you.
